| The Letter A brooch is a humble example of the type worn by Chaucer's
Prioress - A for Amor - and there are numerous extant brooches of this sort in
pewter, copper alloy, and precious metals. This brooch is copied after an example in Van
Beuningen's collection, and dates from the turn of the fifteenth century.
