| The Mermaid, copied from a late 14th or early 15th century Netherlandish
example, looks at herself in the mirror as she combs
her hair. Note the similarity in overall shape between this brooch and the merman -
her mirror is echoed in his shield. One suspects the two originals are from the same shop,
since other examples of merpeople brooches show different arrangements of the limbs.
