Pilgrimage and Religion

Pilgrimage is a defining feature of the social landscape of the Middle Ages, and the Christian religion a foundation for every aspect of society throughout Europe. If you exclude belt fittings (which are incredibly numerous), one third to one half of all extant pewter castings are pilgrim signs or other religious objects. We include among our religious goods a small number of items that span religions or which might more precisely be described as magical, with roots in religion.
