Saints' Badges and Pilgrim Signs

We offer highly authentic replicas of saints’ badges and pilgrim signs from the Middle Ages. We have dozens of saints from England and the Continent and many representations of the Blessed Virgin and the various Persons of the Trinity. Many of these brooches and pendants were pilgrim signs, purchased by travelers to sacred locales; some cannot be identified with specific places of pilgrimage, although they clearly depict saints or sacred objects.

Some churches produced an enormous number of saints’ badges and pilgrim signs – Canterbury is preeminent. We are frequently asked for representations of specific saints or places for which we know of no extant original badges – in general, for a medieval pilgrimages, one finds pewter badges only if:
1 – the church was a site of popular pilgrimage (visited by thousands or tens of thousands of ordinary people yearly);
2 – during the period 1300-1600;
3 – in an area with abundant tin.
If any of these are missing, it is far less likely that there will have been a pewter badge.
