Black Prince Plume Brooch

$10.00

2016 marked the 540th anniversary of the death of Edward of Woodstock (15 June 1330 – 8 June 1376), known to us as the Black Prince, and we took advantage of the occasion to make this brooch, which we had considered making for years. A successful military leader and one of the founders of the Order of the Garter, he was buried in Canterbury Cathedral, and his funeral was a spectacular event that must have taken most of the time between his death and the ceremony on Sept 29, 1476 to prepare for. The original of this badge is believed to have been produced for the occasion. The feather and “ich dene” / “I serve” were Edward’s badge and motto.
