Hunting Horn Brooch

$5.00

The 14th-century original of this stylish item, found in the Thames, is one of several extant English hunting horn brooches. It displays a characteristic complexity in the depiction of an embellished baldric, complete with a fancy tassel. It may be a pilgrim sign of St. Hubert or St. Eustace, although no evidence ties it to a specific shrine. It may also be a secular badge, expressing an interest in hunting or a desire for luck in the hunt. We have had a (Netherlandish) hunting horn pendant for a while, and we thought it would be nice to provide the option of a brooch.
