Regina Terris Brooch

$6.00

Carried here by her worshipers as a cult figure, Louise stands as a visual pun on iconic religious images. I used to be certain she stood in for the Blessed Virgin in a mandorla (like this pilgrim sign of Our Lady of Rocamadour) but I’m considering the other possiblity: the vulvar identity of the wounds of Christ (Martha Easton, “The Wound of Christ the Mouth of Hell: Appropriations and Inversions of Female Anatomy in the Later Middle Ages” in Illuminations: Medieval and Renaissance Studies for Jonathan J.G. Alexander). In any case a great parade and something truly worth worshiping!

The original is dated 1375-1425, and was found in Bruges.
