Magdeburg Buckle / Chape with Interlaced Pattern

$12.00$32.00

This handsome, robust buckle is a close reproduction from a mold excavated in Magdeburg (no later than 1284). The matching buckle plate and chape are pastiches; the shape of the chape and the decoration of both chape and the buckle plate are based on a copper alloy chape excavated at the New Market (Novy Targ) site in Wrocław, Poland, dated to the turn of the 14th century. The shape of the buckle plate is based on several contemporary buckles.

This is our 11th copy of one of the great trove of molds from Magdeburg. Similarly, the structure of the chape is based on a mold from Zerbst, c. 1300 – an accurate reproduction of which is used in our Zerbst buckle and chape. See the gallery for a detail.

This is a large and attractive buckle and chape with a very striking appearance; the chape is nearly 4″ (110mm) long. Definitely an item meant to be seen and admired.

Fits a 1 1/4 inch or 32 mm wide strap.
